NASCAR The Complete History
NASCAR: The Complete History
Late in the 20th century, NASCAR drove past USAC, Trans-Am, Can-Am, Indy, NHRA, and Formula One to become America’s most-followed motorsport. Then NASCAR raced past hockey, golf, basketball, and baseball to become one of the most-watched sports on U.S. television.
As with many success stories, NASCAR began with one man and his dream.
William Henry Getty France was a skilled promoter whose word was his bond. In 1948, his National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing gave the fledgling sport honesty and respectability. A national championship series created publicity, and ensured a constant flow of membership and sanctioning fees to Daytona Beach to help grow the sport.
